In recent hours, Algerian activists have launched a large campaign on social media demanding the deportation of Syrians residing in Algeria, following the controversy sparked by a video of the owner of a Syrian restaurant in the city of Oran that included phrases considered offensive to girls.
Social media platforms witnessed a wave of angry posts, in which a number of activists expressed their dissatisfaction with the actions of some Syrian refugees and immigrants, considering that the incident "offended Algerians and the image of hospitality that the country offers to foreigners." One commenter wrote: "The time has come for them to go back to their country, all of them, as they have colonized us," while another said that those who "live off the country's resources do not have the right to insult its people," demanding that the person in question be deported to his country. Other comments included insulting descriptions and explicit calls for mass expulsion, with some commenters calling for "the return of Syrians to their country" after what they considered repeated violations, while others linked their presence to the rise in some manifestations of crime and harassment, according to their expression. A number of activists also demanded the tightening of penalties against the arrested restaurant owner, by withdrawing his license and deporting him permanently from Algeria, considering that the case had ignited a hidden anger towards some of the actions attributed to Syrian immigrants inside the country.
