HIBAPRESS – Follow-up
The Vatican announced on Monday that Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for surgery to remove a lung tumor, with all his activities and public appointments canceled until October 20.
Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni reported that the 71-year-old Pope will be admitted to the hospital around noon on Tuesday, with the recovery period expected to last about a week. The surgery is anticipated to take place at Gemelli Hospital in the Italian capital, Rome, which has a dedicated wing for Popes.
Leo XIV had announced on Sunday that doctors discovered a pulmonary nodule at a very early stage, explaining that he decided to undergo surgery based on the recommendations of the medical team, who considered surgical intervention the most appropriate option to manage the condition.
Small pulmonary nodules are often discovered during medical examinations for other reasons and may not cause obvious symptoms, while larger nodules can be associated with shortness of breath, chest pain, or chronic cough.
