HIBAPRESS – Omar Razzini (Barcelona Office)
As night falls in Barcelona, the noise of the streets gradually subsides, but the cold of winter raises its voice above all else. In those moments, many find only the sidewalks as a temporary shelter to face the harshness of the weather. Tired faces, frozen bodies, and covers that barely protect from the winds that penetrate the bones.
Among these homeless people, familiar faces from the Moroccan community appear; young people and men who left their homelands in search of a better life opportunity, only to find themselves, in the end, spending the night outdoors, far from warmth and family. Some wrap themselves up, some try to light a small flicker of fire, and others sleep under the metro stations, escaping the merciless cold.
Humanitarian organizations in Barcelona are trying, as much as possible, to extend a helping hand: hot meals, blankets, and shelters that receive those they can. But the numbers are much greater than the possibilities, and the night comes every day more harshly than the one before.
In this scene, the question poses itself strongly:
Is temporary solidarity enough to save lives? Or does the city need deeper solutions before the cold turns into an annual tragedy?
In the streets of Barcelona, many are still waiting for an answer… under the frost
