Mohamed Salem Ben Massoud, a member of the Moroccan delegation to the United Nations, on Thursday rejected the inclusion of the Moroccan Sahara issue in the proceedings of the 153rd session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held in Arusha, Tanzania, considering the dispute to fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the United Nations.
The parliamentary advisor, Ben Massoud, stated in a speech on behalf of the Moroccan delegation that Morocco rejects the use of the parliamentary platform for purposes other than those designated for it, and attempts to divert the discussion by raising the Moroccan Sahara issue irrespective of the context of the meetings and their agenda.
The speaker affirmed that the UN track has seen progress in terms of Security Council resolutions, pointing to Resolution 2797, which considered the Moroccan initiative for autonomy as a basis for reaching a final solution to the dispute.
Conversely, Ben Massoud raised the plight of detainees in the Tindouf camps on Algerian soil, questioning the reasons for overlooking their suffering, in light of what he described as restrictions on freedoms and grave human rights violations, and Algeria's refusal to register them, a matter he said has been present in relevant Security Council resolutions.
