The Italian MP of Moroccan origin, Widad El Bakkali from the Democratic Party, has sharply criticized the Italian government's policies towards youth, warning that tightening the security approach and punitive legislation may turn social challenges into justification for stigma and exclusion.
During a speech before the Italian Parliament today, El Bakkali rejected what she described as racist and oppressive laws, questioning the effectiveness of confronting the problems of adolescents and youth with a logic of deterrence instead of addressing the root causes of marginalization and investing in more comprehensive social and educational solutions.
El Bakkali's statements have reignited the debate on the Italian government's directions on security, immigration, and youth issues, amid opposition warnings that generalizing suspicions and prejudices does not solve crises, but rather threatens to deepen social divisions. Between enforcing the law and creating stigma, the real challenge remains holding individuals accountable without condemning an entire generation.
